Screening utgör ett led i den förebyggande hälso- och sjukvården, och innebär undersökning av befolkningen eller en viss befolkningsgrupp i syfte att konstatera en viss sjukdom eller dess förstadium.
Olika slags screeningar inom hälso- och sjukvården har långa traditioner i Finland, och ordnadet ligger på kommunernas ansvar. Till det riksomfattande screeningprogrammet i Finland hör bland annat bröstcancerscreening för kvinnor i åldern 50–69 med två års mellanrum, screening i syfte att förebygga cancer i livmoderhalsen hos kvinnor i åldern 30–60 med fem års mellanrum, samt fosterscreening under graviditetstiden.
Utbudet av nya screeningar utvecklas hela tiden. Att inleda en ny screening för hela befolkningen kräver ändå mycket förberedande arbete, och nyttan och nackdelarna med en screening måste övervägas och vara i balans.
Den nya publikationen Screening i Finland 2014 bygger på arbetet av den screeningarbetsgrupp som tillsatts av social- och hälsovårdsministeriet. Arbetsgruppen har under tio års tid utvärderat pågående screeningprogram inom hälso- och sjukvården, nya screeningprogram som föreslås och metoderna för dessa.
