Sjukhusens vårdköer har blivit kortare
Bestämmelserna om de längsta väntetiderna för vård i folkhälsolagen och lagen om specialiserad sjukvård trädde i kraft för ett knappt år sedan. Enligt den här s.k. vårdgarantin skall sjukhusen ordna en bedömning av vårdbehovet inom tre veckor från att remissen anlänt till sjukhuset. Vård som konstaterats vara nödvändig skall inledas senast inom sex månader.
Social- och hälsovårdsministeriet har utrett tillgången till vård under tiden augusti 2005-januari 2006. I oktober 2002, då sjukvårdsdistrikten fick ett tilläggsanslag för att avveckla vårdköerna, väntade 66 000 personer i över ett halvt år på att få vård. I augusti 2005 hade antalet sjunkit till 34 000 personer och i slutet av år 2006 till cirka 20 000. Sjukvårdsdistrikten räknar med att antalet personer som väntar på vård i över ett halvt år är cirka 5 000 i slutet av juni 2006.
I Syd-Österbottens, Kymmenedalens, Lapplands, Länsi-Pohja och Södra Savolax sjukvårdsdistrikt väntar endast några tiotal personer på vård i över sex månader. Också i Helsingfors och Nylands sjukvårdsdistrikt har vårdköerna snabbt blivit kortare, i oktober 2002 väntade 17 400 personer på vård i över sex månader och i slutet av år 2005 var antalet 4 700. Långsammast har utvecklingen varit i Norra Österbottens och Kajanalands sjukvårdsdistrikt, där det till och med har varit svårt att få köptjänster trots att sjukvårdsdistrikten reserverat medel för detta ändamål.
Man har förkortat vårdköerna genom att utveckla verksamhetssätten, genom personalens extra arbete och genom att köpa tjänster av privata serviceproducenter eller enheter inom tredje sektorn, såsom sjukhuset Orton, Reumastiftelsens sjukhus och Diakonistiftelsens sjukhus.
I juni 2006 kommer den över sex månader långa vårdkön att bestå främst av personer som väntar på plastikkirurgiska, handkirurgiska och ortopediska ingrepp samt sannolikt också av personer som väntar på tjänster inom hörselvården.
Social- och hälsovårdsministeriet utreder sjukhusens vårdkösituation igen i juni 2006.
