Designer drugs classified as illegal drugs for the first time
Drug policy
Seven new substances are classified as illegal drugs in Finland. This is the first time that chemically produced designer drugs are classified as illegal drugs in Finland. According to the amendment to the Narcotics Act that took effect in June 2011, new substances that are dangerous to health can be classified as illegal drugs at the national level. Before, the decisions were taken at the UN or EU level.
JWH-018, JWH-073 and JWH-018 are synthetic substances used as drugs and sold under such names as "Spice", "Jehovah" or synthetic cannabis.
New entries in the list of illegal drugs include also, among other substances, the ecstasy-like substance mCPP, the ecstasy-derivative methylone, the central nervous system stimulant 2-DPMP and Bromo-DragonFLY which is similar to LCD.
Designer drugs are new psychoactive substances that are often marketed as "legal drugs" in the Internet. Usually the substances have no medical or industrial use.
The Decree will enter into force on 12 March 2012. As of that date, the production, import, sale, possession and use of the listed substances are prohibited under the Narcotics Act.
