Globalization, the global economic situation, the ageing population and increasing need for care represent challenges for our tax-based welfare system. Can the Nordic model inspire progress elsewhere in the world? This was discussed at the Nordic welfare conference "What Role will the Nordic Welfare Model Play in Globalization" that Finland arranged in Helsinki in April as a part of the activities of Finland's presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2011.
A conference report has now been published. The report consists of an executive summary of the content of the conference and the experts' presentations and results from workshops. The conference had the following objectives: to elucidate how the Nordic Model can contribute to international welfare strategies. An objective was also to clarify the contents of the Nordic and international welfare programmes and discuss their consequences, challenges and alternatives. The conference was organized by the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare and the Nordic Centre for Welfare and Social Issues.
