European cooperation on market surveillance

Application of product legislation

The Expert Group on Machinery (MD EG), which deals with issues related to the application of the Machinery Directive, operates under the Machinery Committee of the European Commission. The Expert Group (PPE EG) operating under the Committee on Personal Protective Equipment discusses issues related to the application of personal protective equipment, and the Expert Group (CEG) operating under the Committee on Cableway Installations discusses issues concerning cableway installations.

Administrative cooperation on market surveillance between EU Member States

The Member States and the Commission discuss matters related to the market surveillance of products in Administrative Cooperation Groups (AdCos).

Nordic cooperation

Nordic authorities cooperate on market surveillance issues. They hold annual meetings and may carry out joint market surveillance projects as necessary.

European product standards

Harmonised European standards (EN standards) have been set for products to determine the safety or protection levels required of products.
Manufacturers do not have to apply these standards when designing and manufacturing products, but the standards set out the technical solutions whereby the requirements for products can be met.

Notified Bodies

Notified bodies are inspection bodies designated and supervised by EU Member States to carry out type-examinations required by EU product legislation.
They perform type-examinations of certain types of machinery and safety components and of most personal protective equipment.
Information about notified bodies can be found on the European Commission’s NANDO website
