No health hazard from volcanic ash cloud in Finland
Finland's National Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) has examined the scientific data available on the volcanic ash cloud in April this year. THL concludes in information submitted to the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health during the incident that the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland did not cause a health hazard to people in Finland, nor are there likely to be any adverse effects later on. Even population groups sensitive to urban air pollution were not likely to be affected by the volcanic ash; this includes pregnant women, newborn babies, people with asthma, and elderly people with chronic lung or heart disease. The current increases in inhalable particle concentrations in cities and towns in Finland are due to traffic-derived re-suspended road dust; this temporary drop in urban air quality is typical of all the Nordic cities right after winter.
