Markus Henriksson will continue as Director-General of the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health
On Thursday, 7 November, the Government appointed Markus Henriksson as Director-General of Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health. Henriksson will continue in his current position as he has served as Director-General of the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health since 2017.
His new term as Director-General will begin on 1 January 2020. The appointment is for a fixed period until 31 December 2024.
Prior to his duties as Director-General, Henriksson worked as Senior Medical Adviser and Group Head at the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health in 2010 –2017. He worked as Chief Physician both at the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health and at the National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs in 2007 –2010. Before that, Henriksson was for a long time responsible for management tasks at the Finnish Defence Forces, as Chief Physician of the Central Military Hospital and as Director of the Centre for Military Medicine. Henriksson holds the degree of Doctor of Medical Science.
The Director-General leads the activities of the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, is responsible for achieving the performance targets set for the authority and ensures that the authority's duties will be managed economically and effectively. The Director-General monitors the development in the authority’s field of activity and is in charge of the general development and reforming of the authority’s operations. The Government appoints the Director-General.
The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health monitors the activities of healthcare and social welfare services, alcohol business and environmental healthcare services. In addition, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health is the national licensing authority for healthcare and social welfare. It also guides the activities of the regional state administrative agencies. The objective of the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health is to ensure consistent licensing, guidance and enforcement practices all over the country.
