The Agreement on Social Security Between Finland and Australia ready for signature
The Agreement on Social Security between Finland and Australia will enable payment of the Australian residence-based age pension to persons resident in Finland and payment of the Finnish old-age pension under the national pension scheme to persons resident in Australia. Finnish earnings-related pension is already payable to persons resident in Australia on the basis of the legislation on earnings-related pensions. According to the Agreement an employee sent from Finland to work in Australia remains covered by the Finnish Employees Pensions Act and the Finnish National Pension Act for five years and the contributions are paid to Finland, not to the Australian scheme.
The Agreement on Social Security between Finland and Australia will be signed on 10 September 2008 in Helsinki. The Agreement contains provisions that require the consent of the Parliament of Finland, and therefore the Government will next bring the Agreement before Parliament. The aim is that it will enter into force on 1 July 2009.
