New drugs legislation passed in May seeks a comprehensive prevention strategy that covers the importing, exporting, manufacture, spread and use of illegal drugs. It updates current legislation in line with EU policy. The legislation, approved by the government 18 May and put to parliament the next day, increases the responsibilities of the chemicals and medicinal drugs sectors.
The reformed legislation will also see amendments to criminal drugs law and to the law on the protection of employees’ confidentiality in working life and to occupational health and safety legislation. The government is expected to issue a new drugs directive once the new legislation takes effect.
