The government has appointed Finland’s first Ombudsman for Children. Former Member of Parliament Maria Kaisa Aula will take up the post at the beginning of September. The Ombudsman’s office is based in Jyväskylä and is run as part of the MSAH.
The tasks of the Ombudsman are to promote the interests of children and ensure that children’s rights are met throughout the country.
The post does not handle individual cases or family matters, but deals with broad questions of children’s living conditions, legislation and decision-making. The ombudsman also gives advice and guidance to authorities and organisations working with children as well as to children themselves.
