Finland targets food salt levels at EU
The 3 June session of the EU’s council for employment, social policy, health and consumer affairs agreed on a proposed regulation concerning the nutritional and health claims of foods.
Finland has stressed the need to harmonise legislation governing nutritional and health claims put on manufactured foods. In particular it has called for applying clear criteria for claims concerning claims about salt and sodium levels of foods.
The present regulation on low salt products does not ensure that consumers are given separate information on sodium limits. In Finland’s view this does not promote low salt consumption, but it has yet o persuade other member states on the issue.
