The use of conciliation and arbitration in criminal cases, which has been practiced in about half of Finnish localities for some time, is to be expanded nationwide from June this year.
The method, used essentially in cases involving juvenile crime, has generally had good results and is used as a means of early intervention to prevent young people getting sucked into a life of crime.
The service is to be directed and monitored overall by the MSAH, while state provincial administrations will be responsible for organizing conciliation services throughout the country.
