The MSAH is to launch a free vaccination programme on the Åland islands aimed at protecting people against contracting tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), also known as Kumlinge disease.
The programme will start in January, comprising two initial vaccinations and a booster the following year. The vaccination programme will also target children in 7 year-old age groups over the next four years.
TBE is a chronic, long-term disease that can result in permanent brain damage. Residents in Åland are exposed to a high risk of contracting TBE from the islands’ disease carrying ticks.
