Heli Backman appointed as Director General of Department for Insurance and Social Security
On Thursday 2 April, the Government appointed Heli Backman as Director General of the Department for Insurance and Social Security at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
She will take up her duties on 1 May 2020. The appointment is for a fixed period until 30 April 2025.
Backman has worked as Director at the Finnish Centre for Pensions since 2017. Her responsibilities include legal matters, insurance supervision, and international pension matters. In 2009–2017, Backman was Head of the Pension Insurance Unit of the Insurance Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. She has worked as pensions specialist in different ministries since 2001 and as head of an unemployment fund in 1997–2000. She holds the degree of Master of Laws.
The Department for Insurance and Social Security at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health directs and steers insurance policy and is responsible for drafting social insurance and other insurance legislation.
