Markus Henriksson appointed as Director-General of Valvira
On Thursday, 6 April, the Prime Minister’s Office appointed Markus Henriksson as Director-General of Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health.
Henriksson will start in this position on 1 May 2017. The appointment is for a fixed-term period until the end of 2018.
Henriksson has served as Medical Counsellor and Group Leader at Valvira since 2010. During the years 2007–2010, he worked as chief physician for Valvira and National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs. Before that, Henriksson was for a long time responsible for management duties at the Finnish Defence Forces, as chief physician of the Central Military Hospital and as director of the Centre for Military Medicine. Henriksson is Doctor of Medical Science by education.
The Director-General leads the activities of Valvira, is responsible for achieving the performance targets set for the authority and ensures that the authority's duties will be managed economically and effectively. The Director-General monitors the development in Valvira’s area of responsibility and is in charge of the authority’s general development and of reforming its activities. The Director-General is appointed by the Government.
The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) supervises the activities of healthcare and social welfare, alcohol business and environmental healthcare. In addition, Valvira is the national licensing authority for healthcare and social welfare and steers the Regional State Administrative Agencies in order to ensure consistent licensing, guidance and supervisory practices all over the country.
