Mika Salminen appointed Director General of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare
Mika Salminen, Doctor of Philosophy, has been appointed Director General of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) for the period of 1 January 2024–31 December 2028. A total of 17 candidates applied for the post of Director General by the closing date. The Director General is appointed by the Government for a period of five years at a time.
Mika Salminen has held various managerial and supervisory positions at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and its predecessor, the National Public Health Institute, since 1996. He has also served as a member of the THL management team since 2013. In addition, he has worked, for example, as an expert and head of unit at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm and held international research posts in the USA.
The Director General of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare directs the Institute’s activities and is responsible for achieving the performance targets set for the Institute. The Director General monitors developments in the Institute’s field of activity and is in charge of the general development and reforming of the Institute’s activities.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is a research and development agency operating in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. It is subject to performance guidance by the Ministry. The tasks of the Institute include monitoring and conducting research on the health and wellbeing of the population.
