Eija Pelkonen to continue as Director General of Fimea
On Wednesday 13 September, the Government appointed Eija Pelkonen as Director General of the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea). Pelkonen has served as Director General of Fimea since 2018.
Her new term as Director General will begin on 1 October 2023. The appointment is for a fixed term until 30 September 2028.
Prior to her current position, Pelkonen served as Director of Fimea’s Supervision and Licences Department. Before that, she had worked as Head of the Inspectorate Unit at the National Agency for Medicines since 2000. In 2017, Pelkonen worked in the fixed-term position of Pharmaceutical Senior Specialist at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. She holds the degree of Master of Science (Pharmacy).
The Director General leads the activities of Fimea, is responsible for achieving the performance targets set for the agency and ensures that the agency’s duties are managed effectively, economically and successfully. The Director General monitors the development of Fimea’s field of activity and is in charge of the general development of the agency.
The Finnish Medicines Agency Fimea is a central agency under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. It supervises medicinal products, medical devices, blood and tissue products and biobanks, and develops the pharmaceutical sector.
