Petteri Tiippana to continue as Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority
On Thursday 18 January, the Government appointed Petteri Tiippana to serve as Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), starting on 1 February 2024. The appointment is for a fixed term until 31 January 2029.
Tiippana has served as Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority since 2013. Prior to this, he served as Director of the Department of Nuclear Reactor Regulation at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority from 2009 to 2013. Before that, he had held various other supervisory and expert positions at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority since 1997. Tiippana holds the degree of Master of Science in Technology.
The Director General leads the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority and ensures that the Authority’s tasks are carried out economically, effectively and successfully.
The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority is a state administrative authority operating under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health that promotes and supervises radiation safety and the safety of the use of nuclear energy. In addition to its supervisory duties, the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority is responsible for, among other things, preparedness and expert duties related to radiation hazards; research, development and assessment activities that fall within its sphere of operation; and duties related to communications and training. It also participates in national and international cooperation in its sector.
