EU gender equality ministers to discuss violence against women on 23–24 November
The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU will hold an informal ministerial meeting on equality in Pamplona on 23–24 November 2023. Minister of Social Security Sanni Grahn-Laasonen will represent Finland at the meeting. The meeting will focus on violence against women.
The EU gender equality ministers will discuss measures and best practices for improving data collection on violence against women and for strengthening support services for victims of violence. They will also discuss emerging forms of violence, such as online violence.
“Violence against women is also a serious problem in Finland. The Government is committed to promoting gender equality and systematically combating violence against women both nationally and internationally. I think it is important that we continue the good work that Finland has done to promote gender equality in the EU,” says Minister Grahn-Laasonen.
Violence against women is combated by means of various international treaties, for example. In addition, the EU Gender Equality Strategy aims to eradicate violence against women. Currently, the EU is also discussing the Commission’s proposal for a directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence.
No decisions will be made at the informal meeting.
