Radiation accidents

A radiation accident is a rare incident that may be caused, for example, by an accident at a nuclear power plant, other use of radiation or the transport of a radiological agent. Despite the rarity of such accidents, the healthcare and social welfare services need to be prepared to treat patients who have been exposed to radiation or radiological agents.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has drawn up guidelines for the use of iodine in case of a radiation hazard. The guidelines recommend sheltering indoors as the primary precaution to take in case of a radiation hazard, because it is the most effective way to reduce exposure to radiation. Taking iodine tables is a secondary complimentary precaution recommended for people aged 40 or younger and for pregnant women.
